Wall Twp. Speedway
1950 - 2007 . Rest in Peace ?
There are numerous updates here. Please scroll
down for all of them !!!
I hope this will not be so,but reality ,and our economic times are speaking louder than
hopes.
{ I'll be updating this link (oldest / top - latest / scroll down ) .Whenever I find
/ get something to post here . So please keep checking back }
Now for the rest !
UPDATE !!! (3/29/08)
Wall Speedway personal update !!!
Yes ! This is where I spent a few hours ,late this morning, into early this afternoon.
Don't eulogize this track just yet !
That's the scuttlebutt that I heard from " Little Wall " ,the 1/4 midget track, where the kids ARE
RACING !
I had a long talk with one of the regular track vendors ( The guy who had his little souvie truck that sat near the turn
4 concession stand) this morning.
He had spoken to former track mgr. Jim Morton,at a New Egypt Speedway, swap meet, last weekend, and was told not to give up
hope.
This track may yet run 1/2 a season (probably the 2nd 1/2). Complete with TURKEY DERBY !
Stay tuned !
(full info.as of 3/28/08)
Wall Speedway Closing Updated again . Now it's 6 updates
!
Update 1 :
(3/18/08 ) Courteousy of Jayski:
New Jersey Track Closes: Speculation that Wall Township Speedway would not open this season are fact, not fiction, a fax from managing partner Timothy H. Shinn of Manasquan said on Friday.
Shinn's signature represented the four partners who own the speedways — Fred Archer, Joseph Sanzari and the Creamer
brothers (Fletch, Glenn and Dale). "It is with an extremely heavy heart that I must, at this time, formally announce the closing
of our beloved Wall Township Speedway, formerly known to the vast majority of us as Wall Stadium," the release said.(Asbury Park Press), the track held on Cup race back on July 26, 1958, won by Jim Reed.(Racing Reference)(3-15-2008) Comment here
{ Personal note. I know I posted this article on the main, news page, and in the "Grass Roots Racing Section".
But this news really hit me,along with dozens of Wall Speedways drivers, track workers, and thousands of fans, very
hard.
This was my / our local track.
Just like hundreds of other tracks around the country, that are now gone. I now know how hard it
is for the drivers, and fans,to try and accept this.
The truth of the matter is. It isn't acceptable.
NASCAR,along with the tracks, states, municipal governments, drivers, and fans must combine to stop this.
Enough already ! It's time to stop the bleeding !
UPDATE 2 :
(3/20/08 )
An email correspondence between the Mayor of Wall Twp. and an on-line buddy of mine, mackt. THANKS Mackt !!! !!!
From JKSChouse@aol.com
Subject : Wall Speedway

Dear Mr. Thompson,
I too was sorry to hear the news over the weekend that the owners of the Wall Townships Speedway was closing after decades
of racing within Wall Township. While the Town has always grappled with some of the noise and spill-over effect of Wall Stadium,
it has been a truly unique recreation opportunity for our residents and visitors to Wall Township over the years. The Stadium
has provided opportunities unlike any other for our municipality.
While the property has for many years been zoned for office and/ or research uses, the non-conforming race track has
been an integral part of Wall Township through the years. Its unique characteristics gave Wall Township an identity among
racing fans. The Township had no involvement or influence on the owners decision to close.
The property on Route 34 is a little over 50 acres and has, like all properties along the Route 34 corridor, been
dedicated for office and research use. There have been suggestions through the years for retail or housing, however, none
of these uses have been embraced by the Township.
No formal application has ever been made. The racetrack has continued to operate as a non-conforming use, since it was
in existence long before the zoning rules and regulations in Wall Township were developed. The Township views Route 34 as
our industrial and corporate corridor, the uniqueness of Wall Stadium will certainly be missed. It has given many summertime
memories to our residents over the years.
Sincerely,
John P. Devlin Mayor, Wall Township
Update 3 :
I contacted Mayor Devlin myself. I'll post my letter here + his response ,if,and when , I get it.
Update 4 .
MY GOD !!! I got a FORM LETTER email response from Mayor Devlin . Only the recipients name was changed.

Needless to say ... I did respond demanding that he specifically answer my question. "
Instead of answering my question ,you sent me a form letter. I know someone else who got the exact same email
response !
Wrong move.
My question basically was this . Will the Township of Wall continue to resist plans for any development on the
track site,as it has done in the past ? Or will the speedway site be allowed to sit dormant ? "

Update 6
More email correspondence between myself, and Wall Twp's. Mayor Devlin.
My reply to him is on the top. His reply to my question (bottom),is in the middle.
Thank you for your reply. However ...
I am sorry, but I am certain that I can speak for every race fan in New Jersey. As well as most of the fans across
the United States.
We've lost far to many race tracks, over the last 20-30 years across the Garden State.
Every effort MUST BE MADE to ensure that this track remains just that. A RACE TRACK .
It's a part of racing history. It's a part of New Jersey history. It's a part of Wall's history, and should be included
as a part of the future for all.

Re: Wall Stadium
Dear Mr. Fekete:
I'm sorry you weren't satisfied with the answers I gave you relative to Wall Stadium.
Wall
Township has never resisted plans for the development of Wall Stadium. The Stadium is, and has always been, zoned for office, research and warehousing uses. As a racetrack, it is a non-conforming use. Development of the site is consistent with the existing zoning
all along Route 34. The Route 34 corridor is zoned as our industrial corridor
within the Townsh ip and can be built upon for the permitted uses associated with that zone.
We call Wall Stadium unique because it is a unique type of business. Nonetheless,
it is a business and the owners decided to close it, I am assuming, because it was not as profitable as they would like. There have been attempts to rezone the property over the years, but Wall
Township is comfortable with its Master Plan and continues to view Route 34 as
our business and industrial area. We would not resist someone coming forward
and buying Wall Stadium and operating it has it has been in the past. But like
any other business, I su ppose the cost and benefits must be considered for any business to prosper.
Hopefully, I have answered the questions you have regarding this site. If
not, please don't hesitate to contact me again.
Very truly yours,
JOHN P. DEVLIN
Mayor

future ?
You didn't answer my question from a recent email correspondence
My question basically was this . Will the Township of Wall continue to resist plans for any development on the
track site,as it has done in the past ? Or will the speedway site be allowed to sit dormant ?
Keep in mind that you have referred to the site as " unique". While I have read in a recent newspaper article, where
other Wall Twp. council members have also described the speedway as " historic ",and an " icon ".
The township of Wall cannot allow anything else to occupy this site.
It must remain a speedway, and be re-activated as such.
Sincerely
Joseph L. Fekete

Site Owner :Joe's NASCAR Friends & Family. "NASCAR news that isn't just NASCAR news".
An earlier article that I posted on this site waaaaaaay back in January. This includes my comments
with a brief history of the track :
From the "home" page on this very site dated
1 / 9 / 08 !!!
Latest report from AARN,and Earl Krause is saying that the 4 owners are 50-50 on continuing racing operations
there.
Owner Tim Shinn, wants to keep it going. But the track has not made the moeny that was expected ,in recent years.
Track operator Jim Morton, and office manager,Sue Simpson, have been laid off.
The ROC tour,is currently listing it's race dates @ Wall,as "tentative".
Wall Speedway has also cancelled it's planned display @ the upcoming Motorsports 2008 @ the Atlantic City Convention Center.
There is a little bit more on this ,that I didn't post on that forum.
Tim Shinn still hopes to open the track in April . Shinn states : "Right now we ,as equal partners, are
evaluating everything relating to the track, personel, and money made and lost. We're at a crucial point. My own feeling is
to go forward (with the operation of the track). But right now, honestly,I can't say what will happen with Wall as a racetrack.
I can't make the decision by myself. But (as of Monday) there has not been a decision to close (the track)."
Shinn goes on to state that while the track office has been closed, the phone has been shut
off,and the track operator, and track manager has been laid off as employees : "If we're racing in April, the office will open.
I will tell you that we (owners) are having meetings this week, and want to make a decision
as to exactly what the future plans are for the track,by the middle of the month".
For those of you who don't know me.
Wall Speedway (fromerly known as Wall Stadium),a paved 1/3 mile hi-banked oval is
one my 2 "local tracks" . New Egypt Speedway ( a 1/2 mile dirt track) is the other.
Wall is a track that,several years ago,I,along with many others,fought a long ,hard fight,to
keep it out of the clutches of a developer.
A fight that ,at that time,we won.
Wall Speedway is also the track that started the racing careers of "Hollywood"
Ray Evernham,and Martin Truex Jr.
It is the last "paved" oval in the State of New Jersey, and has a rich 55+ year ,NASCAR history.
Richard Petty raced here,in the old Grand National Days ( but I don't think he won here
! ). Bobby Allison did win a race,or 2 here, back then. Along with many other NASCAR Grand National Drivers.
Drivers like Kyle Petty, Geoff Bodine, and Jimmy Spencer, also raced here(in their "modified"
racing days ) back in the early, and mid-1980's. I think all 3 of them won feature races here, but I am only positive about
Jimmy Spencer doing so.
While this is a brief description. Strictly ' off the top of my head." You can see
that there is a very rich NASCAR history here. It would be a very sad day. Very Sad indeed. If this track would be allowed
to vanish into NASCAR history, and be plowed under for yet another ( not needed) development, industrial park,or a shopping
mall.
More of the Wall Speedways history ,from the track website itself
: Wall Township Speedway-Track History:
Long before Bruce Springsteen ever belted out the words to "Born to
Run", the Jersey Shore has been the place to be for fun and excitement during the summer months for inland Northeast residents.
The lure of the Atlantic Ocean and all of the entertainment hot spots
that it has spawned continually draws vacationers from thousands of miles to the North, West and South to enjoy it's recreational
pleasures. Among the many items on the seaside menu to enjoy are the ocean and it's beaches and the boardwalks of Belmar,
Point Pleasant and Seaside Heights. Lounges and nightclubs abound near the shoreline making for after hours fun for the many
local inhabitants and the vacationers that are drawn here. The Great Adventure amusement park is just a half-hour inland from
the beaches yet adding another place of interest to an already exciting area for summer fun.
Nestled among all of this activity is one of the most successful stock
car racing short tracks in the country. Strategically located at the intersection of the Garden State Parkway. Interstate
195 and New Jersey Highway 34 is Wall Township Speedway, a high banked third-mile paved oval that has been hosting exciting
racing events for the past 54 years!
The founders of the speedway, Thomas and Jennie Nicol, first fell
in love with the sport by visiting the Long Branch Speedway. Once the Nicols assembled a 55-acre tract of land off Route 34,
they began to visit speedways from New Hampshire to Virginia, noting the bad points to avoid and the good ones to incorporate
into their design.
Thoughts of the future were obviously in Mr. Nicol's mind as the track
was constructed with a steep 30 degree banking in the corners and 16 degree banking on the straights which allowed the speeds
to increase while still keeping a margin of safety intact.
The comfort of the spectator was also a first priority from those
early days as the track and it's grandstands, which line the front straight, were built in a man-made bowl. This procedure
allowed the foundation of the spectator seating area to be formed of poured concrete.
Although the Nicol's original design was a good one, new owners took
over the speedway in February, 2002, and immediately began a massive renovation and improvement plan. The Creamer family,
Joseph Sanzari, Tim Shinn and Fred Archer, partners in Wall Township Speedway, knew that an update was needed to ensure that
the race fans to today were comfortable.
Although the improvements are ongoing at Wall Township Speedway thus
far the owners have rebuilt the grandstand seating, renovated the restroom and food concession facilities, paved the pit area,
added a one-fifth mile "inner oval" to the speedway which also serves as a safety apron and recently replace the famous wooden
guardrail with steel in the turns of the the ultra-fast oval.
Wall Township Speedway offers an aggressive schedule from April through
November.
(4/4/08) Update
7...Some other fans reactions to the closure of Wall Speedway .
Courteousy of The Asbury Park Press (http://app.com/apps/pbcs.dll/frontpage) . "Topic of The Day" for Thursday , April 3, 2008 (TOPIC OF THE DAY: Wall Speedway ) :
Township wrong to let track go
Ican't believe it really happened. Wall Township Speedway is closing.
When you live on the Jersey Shore long enough, you learn and embrace different aspects of life that are idiosyncratic:
unique smells, sounds, textures and sights.
Examples: Catching a tan in Avon on the Lincoln Avenue Beach and hearing the faint distant rumble of the trains in the
background, only slightly lower than the rolling and breaking of the waves. The smell of suntan lotion filling your nose as
you chew saltwater taffy. The green hills along the Parkway from Holmdel down to Toms River.
The sounds of bags being filled, money being counted and shoes shuffling in aisles at flea markets in Englishtown and Collingswood.
And the sound of the modified race cars on a Saturday afternoon at Wall Stadium.
How shortsighted the Wall Township Committee is to let this tremendous asset fall through its fingertips. The owners put
forth several reasonable plans to increase revenue and minimize any conceivable encroachment.
A drive-in movie theater that shows family-oriented films — it was a stroke of genius. Once again we punish the people
with good ideas. Why? Because people who moved here about five minutes ago don't like the idea.
Imagine families again driving through the lot, looking to position the car in the best stall. Horns and lights at the
conclusion of the movie as applause. Dad saying to his half-asleep children, "Roll up the window. We're going home." Unfortunately
drive-in theaters don't exist around here anymore.
More importantly neither does Wall Stadium. The beach all afternoon, Pete and Elda's or Vic's for dinner, and then on to
what? Probably an industrial park or another cheap condominium complex.

I'm glad to see someone else has the same opinion I hold true. Put asside how much the weekly track
goers enjoy the entertainment at the track. What will replace it once they plow it under? I think a developer will build another
strip of offices just like all the other empty lifeless ones that exist on Route 34 in the area around the Air Port. Wall
Township needs to give the track owners all the help they can get ( tax brakes ). Wall doesn't need more housing. If houses
are built there the next thing to close will be the Air Port. Too much noise. If you look around Wall Township there are a
lot of empty buisness. I guess that's what they want, all residental no commercial. Bye Bye Wall Township. 4/2/2008

What does that say for short track racing? Well as of April I will be at home in NY at orange county fair speedway. This
place is a home away from home and is the oldest track that is still running even if it is a dirt track. Boy being there has

I have also tried to send a similar
message to Bruton Smith, via the "contact us" link on the
Lowes Motor Speedway website. But I do not know if he ever received my message.
I do know that Bruton
has, once again, been looking at several sites in the NYC / New Jersey
area. To build another speedway.
In my message,I informed
him about the current size of the race track property. Plus the fact that there is a large,
open pit sand mine right next
door.
I suggested that if he
were to purchase both the combined properties. His company would be able to build another Bristol,
or Richmond sized race track.
I also informed him of
the other amenities either right next to this site. 3 major roadways, and en executive styled airport. Plus it's near the famous
"Jeresy Shore",and about 40 miles from New York City.
However ,I do not know,and

Everything is locked up there. Unlike a few weeks ago, when only the main track was locked up. Now
you can't even drive onto the parking lot.
HOWEVER...I was able to clearly see that everything is still intact.
I did speak with Wall Twp's. Administrator,by phone. ( Forgive me for I cannot recall his name).
His response was that there isn't much that the Township of Wall can really do.
They would prefer to see it reman a racetrack, and would love to see someone else own,and operate
the track.
But ,since it is zoned commercial / industrial. If the current track owners sell it to someone(s),other
than track owners. The township really can't do anything , according to state law. To stop it.
When the current owners purchased the track, from the original owners, the Nichol family, some
7 -8 years ago. The purchase price was nearly $ 5m. Now it is almost double that amount.

Speedway (The reply is on top): Hello
Joe,
First things first, there will be a Turkey Derby this November. After
that, then maybe more races next year, even if it's one race a month. No
promises, but we are all trying to make this a track again, and appreciate
any support anywhere right now.
Thanks for asking.
