JEFF GRAVATT TO HANDLE PUBLIC AND MEDIA RELATIONS AND SPONSORSHIPS AT WALL TOWNSHIP SPEEDWAY

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Jeff Gravatt, who served Wall Stadium for years as the media and public relations director, sponsorship director and speedway announcer when the Nicol family operated the third mile paved oval, will return to those duties at the shore speedway this season as promoter Jim Morton opens Wall Township Speedway for the 2009 campaign.

“Like many people, I have a real soft spot in my heart for this race track,” Gravatt said. “I have had some wonderful times there and have made a lot of friends there over the years. Jim Morton did a great job when he reopened the track for last November’s Turkey Derby and I like the ideas he has for this year and beyond to return the track to its former glory.

“I am proud that he has asked me to be a part of it.”

For years the Brick (N.J.) resident not only held the media and public relations director, sponsorship director and speedway announcer positions at the track, but also hosted and produced a local cable television program along with promoting racecar shows in area malls that helped promote the sport. Gravatt has also helped countless area racing teams with their sponsorship efforts.

Once the speedway office reopens in early March, he can be reached at 732-681-6400. Gravatt can always be reached via email at wallspeedwaypr@yahoo.com.

WALL TOWNSHIP SPEEDWAY TO HOST RACE CAR SWAP MEET

ON MARCH 14

WALL TOWNSHIP, N.J. ~ Auto racing teams from all forms of the sport as well as automotive enthusiasts in general will have the opportunity to either sell their parts and equipment or purchase needed items for the new season when a Race Car/Automotive Parts Swap Meet is presented in the paved pit area at Wall Township Speedway on Saturday, March 14. The event, which will run between 7:30 a.m. and 2:00 p.m., has a heavy rain date of the following day.

The Swap Meet, which will feature everything from the smallest part to complete cars, is being organized by the father/son team of Earl and Doug Megill, who are well known in New Jersey for their successful events. A $15 fee is required by all vendors, while buyers and browsers will be admitted free of charge. Earl and Doug Megill can be reached at 732-681-3776 or at cdr30@optonline.net.

“It feels great to have one of our swap meets at Wall Speedway again,” Earl Megill said. “In recent years we have had real good interest in our swap meets not only from the dirt and pavement oval racers, but also from the drag racers, street rodders and muscle car enthusiasts.

“We just want everyone to be sure that they know they are welcome.”

After sitting idle through 2008, with the exception of the overwhelmingly successful “Turkey Derby” race in late-November, Wall Township Speedway will come alive again in 2009. The busy schedule will feature professional auto racing and several types of “special events” that should offer everyone who lives in or visits New Jersey something of interest.

For the auto racers and their fans tentative plans call for early season paid practice sessions before races are presented on selected weekends in April and May. Several racing events will then be presented on selected Saturday nights during the summer months before the annual Turkey Derby caps off the season. Morton also mentioned that news will be coming out soon about the return of the “Sunday Series” on the “inner oval” featuring go-karts and other small car divisions.

In addition to the auto racing events, Morton is currently working with various promoters in an effort to bring other “family friendly” shows and events to the Wall Township stadium this season. Details will be announced soon. Wall Township Speedway is located on Route 34 in Wall Township, N.J., just one mile north of Garden State Parkway exit 98 and Interstate 195 exit 35B. The speedway hotline number 732-681-6400, will be operational when the office opens on February 28. More information is available at www.wallspeedway.com.

I had the privilege of talking to Jim Morton, track operations manager, and pending owner (YES THAT'S "PENDING OWNER")  of Wall Speedway ,at the Motorsports 2009 show in Atlantic City ,today.

The news is 1/2 good, and 1/2 not so good.

Yes ,the track will be running about 13-15 races this year.

No,the track has not been sold...yet.

Something did not go right,at a meeting between the current track owners, and Jim Morton,on Thursday, and Jim told me that he "walked away from the table".

What this holds ,for the future of Wall Speedway. I do not know.

What I do know is this :
   A. As I stated above . The track will run a partial schedule in 2009.

   B. I am not as hopeful / comfortable, as I was,just 24 hours ago.

   C. It is CLEAR,that there is more work to be done.

Courteousy of The Asbury Park Press "Letters to the Editor" (http://www.app.com/article/20081211/OPINION04/81211001/1032 ) :

Dream comes true at Wall Speedway

Recently at Wall Township Speedway, I witnessed a dream come true.

At the end of the 2007 racing season, the track closed and everyone suspected the
year's final race, the Turkey Derby, was the end.

I'd never been to the track and had plans to go to the 2007 Turkey Derby, but
didn't make it. By pure luck, I learned the former manager of the track had made
arrangements with the property owners to lease the track for a 2008 Turkey Derby.
Through the help of many volunteers, the track was readied and the 2008 race was on.

I drove from my home near Stockton to Wall. When I arrived I saw thousands of fans
there. By 11 a.m., all the programs for the day and special sweatshirts were sold out. I was told by regulars that the track had never looked better. The racing was simply fantastic.

I left with this feeling: Wall Township Speedway is very special and deserves to
live. It has a fascinating history and should be preserved for future generations to
enjoy, even if it becomes municipally owned. Today, people are looking at what they have and what they have lost, whether it's their job, a fortune on Wall Street or Wall
Township Speedway.

After the races, I drove home thinking about what I've seen during my lifetime
that's either gone or on it's way out … drive-in movies, bowling alleys, roller rinks
and speedways. They've been replaced by video games, iPods, tract housing and shopping malls.

But on a chilly, sunny late fall day, I saw a dream come true. The old Wall Speedway rose up and showed us all what living men and machines, not video creatures on
a screen, can do in a real … not virtual … world. It also showed us what a special place Wall Township Speedway is.

Wall Township Speedway roared to life this past weekend with a jam-packed house on Saturday afternoon. The track lied dormant all season except for the season-ending event, which, as you can see, was held in front of a standing-room-only crowd. Fans had to be shuttled from a nearby airport as the spectator lot filled to capacity. Jimmy Blewett captured the Open-Tour Type Turkey Derby XXXV race.

NEW - Commentary by Earl Krause from Area Auto Racing News
Tuesday, November 11, 2008
Used with permission from Area Auto Racing News

At 2:06 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 9, 2008, under brisk but sunny conditions at the New Jersey Shore, a wonderful sound was heard at Wall Township Speedway. That’s when veteran driver Tim Arre, at the wheel of the bright red & white-trimmed No. 81 “Wall Modified” division mount fielded by Bob Nelson, drove down from the pit area above turns three and four and onto the track. What was of great significance was that it was the first time in a year that a race car had been on the oval – following the closure of the facility this past March when its ownership group made the sad statement that the 50-plus acres on which the track was located was being put up for sale for development. But, after no racing for all of the spring and summer, Jim Morton – who had served as Wall’s operations manager from mid-2006 through the Turkey Derby of 2007 – made an announcement to Area Auto Racing News that all had been hoping for. Indeed, he had made an agreement with the owners to lease Wall and re-open it to present the 2008 edition of the Derby – the 35th edition of the event.

 Update 26
Courteousy of Jayski :

Wall Turkey Derby XXXV on for Nov. 28-29: There will be a Turkey Derby XXXV at Wall Township Speedway Nov. 28-29. WTS's General Partners have made a agreement with its Operations Manager, Jim Morton, to reopen the 57-year-old banked paved one-third-mile oval for aa many as six dates in November. The first three dates are for practice sessions leading up to the post-Thanksgiving Day classic with Nov. 30 set aside as a rain date. Turkey Derby XXXV format, racing divisions and other details are to be posted on www.wallspeedway.com Sept. 7. The agreement allows a modified stock car racing tradition that Thomas and Jeannie Nicol started in 1974. Some of the best modified stock car drivers in the country have since competed against the local NASCAR Whelen All-American Series stars on the banked paved one-third mile oval. Turkey Derby XXXV is the first event on 'Big Wall' since Turkey Derby XXXIV was held Nov. 23-24, 2007. Justin Gumley, of Colts Neck, was crowned WAAS Turkey Derby Champion while James Civali, of Meridan, Conn. won the 100-lap Open Modified race. Details on wallspeedway.com.(PR)(10-4-2008)

Update #25 (also on top ! ) :
WALL SPEEDWAY TO RUN TURKEY DERBY . November 28,and 29, 2008.

Excerpts from an article called " From the Stands" ;by MacMann, found in the Brick Township, New Jersey, Communicator . Dated Sept. 24 , 2008.

Sorry folks. It's a very local publication. So I couldn't find any links to the newspaper,or the article.

" Wall Stadium will open for Turkey Derby on Thanksgiving weekend.

I sure hope so,but I am a skeptic and have to say I'll believe it when I'm standing there watching the cars go around the track".  Two November Saturday practice dates to allow those entered, to do some testing.

One of the truly unfortunate things about closing Wall Stadium this year was that the owners decision not to open was made so close to the beginning of the season. Most racers had worked through the Winter, and spent time, effort, and money getting their cars ready to race. They were left with nowhere to go.and the cars either sat, were sold,or infrequently raced at tracks several hours away. "

Jim Morton, track manager for the last 1 &1/2 years will lease the track, and promote the event.

They are already working on getting the track ready. Along with the drivers, and car owners. " Word is that Ken Woolley Jr. will be driving the Dick Barney's # 14 in the tour modified race."

" With  sagging real estate  and investment markets it seems that the tracks owners are,and will continue to,have trouble selling the property for anywhere near the $14,000,000 asking price.

Re. the future of the facility :

"There are already rumors that the track will re-open for racing,in 2009. We can only hope and pray .

Looking forward to really seeing you all in the stands again at Wall. Can't wait."

The remainder of the article deals with all kinds of other racing. Ranging from NASCAR,to IRL , F-1, Modified Tour ,Dirt racing,etc.,etc.,etc.

Website for Wall Speedway :   http://www.wallspeedway.com

   I can't wait either !!!

  Hoping  Mother Nature co-operates on November 28th,and 29th , 2008 !

There's now a 24th update (9/19/08) . But This one is going right on top here !!!
